Reporting to the Head - Mechanical Design, you are responsible for providing mechanical engineering expertise to oversee design work associated with TTC facilities and equipment. Your duties include: instructing, supervising, directing and co-ordinating the work of Design Engineers, Engineering Technologists and Design Draftspersons preparing mechanical drawings and specifications for construction contracts; directing and examining the work of consultants and assisting in the overall co-ordination of their designs; supervising the production of standard drawings; supervising and performing field reviews and shop drawing reviews; preparing detailed designs, drawings, specifications, and contract documents, analyses and reports; establishing estimates, schedules, resources, budgets for various projects; stamping and signing drawings ready for tender and construction; performing and confirming design calculations and analysis with respect to mechanical concepts; solving design problems/issues using engineering principles and standard practices; preparing work plans and design reports; researching new technologies and updating design standards; reviewing and checking designs, drawings and specifications for accuracy, completeness, technical detail, code compliance, constructability and maintainability; conducting independent studies and analyses; preparing and making design presentations; taking professional responsibility for the designs as required by the Professional Engineers of Ontario; performing reviews of external projects which potentially impact subway structures; assisting with the day to day supervision of the design team; and performing related duties as assigned. Responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service-provider and an employer.

Skills/Knowledge/Experience

You require sound knowledge of mechanical engineering principles related to mechanical building services, methods, and practices for the design and construction of industrial facilities such as bus garages or structures of similar size and function. Design expertise includes HVAC, plumbing, drainage, and fire protection. Design experience with subway systems is an asset. Specialized experience in high pressure piping, bulk fluid storage and distribution systems, vehicle hoists, cranes, emergency tunnel ventilation and/or smoke control systems, elevators and escalators is also a definite asset. Must know codes, regulations and standards that apply to industrial establishment and subway system building services. Ability to quickly acquire Knowledge of TTC Design Manuals and standards is required. You possess demonstrated ability to carry out and/or co-ordinate projects and studies, and you are ready to supervise the activities of a group of engineering professionals. You are sufficiently familiar with MicroStation or AutoCAD drafting programmes to make minor drawing revisions. Must be computer literate and have a working knowledge of relevant PC based programs related to the work, such as Excel and heat load estimating programmes. Must possess sound judgement; well-developed analytical and problem solving, good interpersonal, verbal communication and technical report writing skills. These skills and knowledge would normally be acquired by obtaining a University Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or the equivalent, combined with a minimum of five years of directly related experience at an engineer’s responsibility level. Registration as a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario is mandatory. Ontario Building Code certification for General Legal, Building Services, and Plumbing is an asset. Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.

Annual Salary Range: $82,264.00 - $102,848.20 (Level 10)
