Reporting to a Superintendent/Supervisor, Rail Cars and Shops, you are responsible for the planning, scheduling, directing and controlling of the maintenance operations in a shop or carhouse facility of the Rail Cars and Shops Department. This work involves the supervision of unionized employees involved with the diagnosis, maintenance, repair, servicing and cleaning of streetcar/subway rail vehicles and various pieces of carhouse/shop equipment and components. You will manage cleaning, servicing, inspection, maintenance, repair and emergency line calls for both revenue and non-revenue vehicles in order to provide safe, clean and mechanically reliable vehicles to the Rail Transportation Department. You are responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service-provider and an employer. You may be required to substitute for other Forepersons during periods of absence. This position provides training and experience opportunities that would prepare an incumbent for a supervisory position. These development opportunities will require the incumbent to transfer to other Foreperson positions within other Carhouses, Rail Shops or the Equipment Control/CIS Desk. This is a 40 hour work week with various shifts and off days.

Skills/Knowledge/Experience

You require thorough knowledge of the mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic and air conditioning systems utilized on streetcar/ subway revenue and service vehicles, combined with a sound knowledge of the diagnostic, inspection, repair and maintenance procedures for these components and vehicles structure. Must have an understanding of how the various skills associated with the maintenance of rail revenue and service transit vehicles are utilized in a rail vehicle repair environment. Must be able to supervise the activities of a group of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled unionized employees. Must possess a good understanding of the applicable regulations governing the maintenance of rail vehicles and applicable environmental regulations, (WHMIS, etc.). You require sound judgement plus well-developed problem solving, organizational, supervisory, interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills including technical report writing. Must have strong scheduling skills with the ability to meet deadlines. These skills and knowledge would normally be obtained through the equivalency of technical school graduation plus community college level courses in electrical or mechanical engineering technology combined with directly related work experience in an environment where streetcar or subway vehicle components and vehicle bodies would be inspected, maintained and repaired to safety critical standards, and prepared for service. Must possess a valid Class G driver’s licence. The successful applicant will be required to complete various courses defined by Management in effective supervision, safety, environmental and other mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and technical courses related to the work. Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.

Annual Salary Range: $74,110.40 – $92,601.60 (Level 8)
