Construction
Union Station Second Platform and Concourse Improvements Project
Update - February 2012
Existing Long-Term Traffic Site Conditions
Front Street and Bay Street Intersection - Traffic Lane Restrictions
A minimum of one traffic lane in all directions approaching and through the Front Street/Bay Street intersection as well as left-turn restrictions will continue to be required in order to carry out the relocation of underground utilities, and construction of the second platform at Union subway station. Some form of these traffic restrictions will continue to spring 2013.
Existing Long-Term Site Condition
Easy Access: The “Lift” at Union subway station (from the moat level to the station concourse level) has been removed to accommodate upcoming construction phases that will affect space within the concourse area of the subway station. During this project an alternative “Lift” is located at Brookfield Place (directional signs are posted throughout the station). The project includes easier access improvements at Union subway station.
Tunnel Pathway to Brookfield Place: Hoarding has been installed in the mid-point of the tunnel pathway to Brookfield Place to facilitate the building of a new automatic entrance, which will serve the east end of the newly expanded subway platform.
Upcoming Long-Term Restriction Changes
Due to the upcoming construction phases and resulting partial closures at Union subway station, pedestrian flow within the station at concourse level will be restricted. Customers are encouraged to leave extra travel time when travelling to Union Station or take advantage of alternate routes including King Station, St. Andrew Station, the City’s underground PATH network, outdoor street level passage or TTC streetcar service on King Street. Customers can avoid line-ups at Union Station by purchasing tickets, tokens and passes at any TTC collector booth, Pass Vending Machine, or over 1,200 Authorized TTC Fare Media Sellers in Toronto.
Front Street:Beginning February 10, 2012 through to the April 2013 the westerly stairwell entrance/exit at street level on the south side of Front Street leading to the subway station concourse will be closed. A portion of the sidewalk adjacent to the stairwell will also be closed and replaced with a temporary walkway.
Access to Union Subway Station from Union Railway Station: The four entry doors at the west end of the moat situated between the subway station and the railway station will be closed in order to accommodate construction of the new second platform and the concourse in this area. Access to the station will be maintained through the remaining doors in the moat area.
