Transit City is one of the largest transit expansion projects in the world today - and it’s happening right here in Toronto. By replacing older, conventional buses with modern, rapid, light-rail vehicles on some of the city’s busiest streets, Transit City will transform Toronto by increasing mobility, strengthening business, offering a greener travel alternative, and enhancing our quality of life.
Moving Toronto into the future
Light-rail transit is coming to Toronto for the first time. It’s the best solution the meet the city’s growing need for modern, rapid, accessible transit.
Already in use in major cities in Canada and around the globe, light-rail transit is quickly becoming the preferred mode for transit expansion projects because it is efficient, sustainable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective. Light-rail transit is successful in dozens of cities including Calgary, Paris, Zurich, Minneapolis, Seattle, Phoenix and Sydney, Australia. LRT is also flexible. Toronto’s LRT will travel underground for 10km on Eglinton Avenue from Keele Street to Laird Drive and underneath Highway 404 on Sheppard Avenue from Don Mills subway station to Consumers Road.
