In Fall 2008, the Toronto Transit Commission began a three-year construction project at Victoria Park Station to facilitate a number of improvements to the station.

Benefits of the Project:

The completed project will result in the following benefits for passengers using Victoria Park Station:

  • New bus terminal at street level;
  • Enhanced station access to/from local community (new widened entrances; widened north bridge, Victoria Park pedestrian bridge improvements, new sidewalks);
  • Full station accessibility (new ramp and elevators); and
  • Enhanced overall station appearance (streetscaping, station finishes and signs).

What Needs to be Done?

  • Re-configuration of the parking area and construction of a temporary bus terminal at street level;
  • Demolition of the existing elevated bus terminal;
  • Improvements to existing north entrance;
  • Upgrade of station finishes;
  • Construction of new main entrance and east automatic entrance;
  • Installation of three new elevators to convert the station to a fully accessible facility;
  • Replacement of the station roof with a new “green roof”;
  • Widening of the elevated pedestrian walkway and installation of new train way windows on north side of the station;
  • Widening of Victoria Park Avenue and Denton Avenue intersection;
  • Relocation of the commuter parking lot (177 spaces) and passenger pick-up drop-off (PPUDO) (12 stalls);
  • Installation of a new Victoria Park Avenue signalized pedestrian crossing;
  • Improvements to streetscaping and entrances; and
  • Completion of station finishes and public artwork.

In addition, the City of Toronto and the TTC are coordinating improvements to pedestrian facilities in the vicinity of the station, including enhancements to the existing Victoria Park pedestrian bridge and a new sidewalk on the west side of Victoria Park Avenue.

Elements

Improvements to be implemented at this station include the following:

  • New main entrance;
  • Upgraded north entrance;
  • Easier Access improvements (ramps and elevators);
  • New east automatic entrance;
  • New surface bus terminal;
  • New north pedestrian bridge;
  • Victoria Park pedestrian bridge upgrades;
  • Victoria Park Avenue and Denton Avenue road widening;
  • New Victoria Park Avenue pedestrian cross walk;
  • Albion entrance relocation;
  • Green roof;
  • Platform level windows;
  • New and improved interior and exterior finishes;
  • Public Art.

Finishes

The station concourse level will have new ceilings and lighting. Overall, through the introduction of glazing around the new elevators to platform level and the south wall to the bus terminal, the concourse level will have improved sightlines and increased natural lighting. The existing terrazzo floors at concourse and platform levels will be refinished and new tiles will be introduced at feature walls in the concourse. The station exterior will also be improved with new windows and with yellow metal feature panels at the platform level on the north side of the station. Glazing and red glass feature panels will be provided at the main, north and new east entrances.

Public Art

The theme for public art, developed by Aniko Meszaros, is ‘Roots’. This theme is in response to the planned green roof of the station and also to the multi-cultural demographic of the surrounding neighbourhood and of Scarborough. The word ‘roots’ in many different languages can be understood to mean one’s cultural background. Public art will be installed at four locations including:

  • North Entrance – Will show a tree’s root system that also evokes images of the globe. A layer of the word “Roots’, translated into various languages on top of the image, subtly changes colours throughout the day and seasons depending on the outside weather.
  • West Concourse “Welcome Wall” – An enlarged image of tree rings represents the history and growth of the community. Passengers using the station are encouraged to interact with the art, which incorporates several thermal paints responding to touch, metaphorically leaving a mark on the world we live in.
  • Bus Platform Canopies and Wall – Filigree panels with root patterns traced around images of the globe will allow sunlight to cast shadows on the platform below. The theme of roots is extended along the concrete retaining wall on the east side of the bus terminal. Five panels are repeated along the wall to achieve a naturalistic pattern.
  • Platform Mural – Panels with the words “community” in different languages layered on top of root pattern will be installed at regular intervals on the platform level walls.

What to Expect During Construction:

Construction started in Fall 2008 and is scheduled for completion in 2011. The station will remain operational during construction. The Passenger Pick-Up and Drop-Off and commuter parking lot will be temporarily relocated and parking will be temporarily reduced.  As well, the Albion entrance will be relocated a short distance north of its current location.  Advance notice and signage will be provided prior to advise on alternative routings and arrangements.

The construction will be conducted in 5 stages:

  • Stage 1 - 2008:  Construct a temporary bus terminal and commuter parking lot.
  • Stage 2 - 2009:  Demolish the existing bus terminal structure.
  • Stage 3 - 2009/10: Construct a new bus terminal at surface level.
  • Stage 4 - 2009/10: Construct/install elevators and new or improved station entrances.
  • Stage 5 - 2010/11: Complete station finishes and public art.

Construction Details:

During demolition of the existing bus terminal and elevated structure, please note:

  • construction vehicle access to the demolition site will be via Denton Avenue from Victoria Park Avenue;
  • efforts will be made to keep dust levels to a minimum;
  • noise from the heavy equipment and demolition activities should be expected;
  • vibration levels during demolition will be monitored closely; and
  • demolition work will be largely confined to the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays with occasional work outside of these weekday hours or on weekends to complete key operations on the same day.

Keeping You Informed:

Periodic updates providing information of construction activities and stages will be posted in the station, delivered to residents in the immediate vicinity and posted on the TTC website throughout the construction period.
