Islington Station Improvements Project
Islington Station Improvements would facilitate redevelopment of Bloor / Islington lands in accordance with City's West District Design Initiative.
Islington Station will be redeveloped with a new TTC bus terminal, new entrances and an expanded passenger pick-up and drop-off facility. New elevators will provide full accessibility to all levels of the station.
Overall, this project will result in more convenient pedestrian and private auto access, improved passenger flow and circulation, and more efficient bus operations.
Overview
In 2010, TTC will start construction of the Islington Station Improvements. The scope of the Project includes:
- Demolition of the existing East Entrance and construction of a new East Entrance,
- Construction of a new 6-bay TTC Bus Terminal with tunnel connection to the station concourse,
- Construction of a new Passenger Pick-Up and Drop-Off and taxi stand,
- Realignment of the Islington Main Commuter Parking Lot,
- Improved streetscaping at the East Entrance,
- Three new elevators for barrier-free access, and
- Additional wayfinding signs.

Finishes
The new Bus Terminal (including tunnel connection to concourse) and new East Entrance finishes will include modern finish materials which will complement the existing station concourse and platform finishes:
Bus Terminal and Tunnel to Station Concourse: A Vshaped “cool” roof will be covered with white gravel to reduce heat absorption. The enclosure of the indoor waiting area of the Bus Terminal will consist of glazing, which will provide natural lighting and a clear view of all bus platforms. The Bus Terminal ceiling will consist of cream coloured metal panels. The Bus Terminal and tunnel walls will be finished with 4x4 inch square, warm white porcelain tiles with dark green accents and the floors will consist of grey terrazzo (matching the existing concourse level floors). The tunnel ceiling will be finished with grey paint and beige acoustic ceiling panels.
East Entrance: The new East Entrance will include glazing and red brick clay tile on the exterior walls. The East Entrance will also have a V-shaped “cool” roof, covered with white gravel and the same interior finish materials and colours as the Bus Terminal and tunnel.
Concourse Level: The tunnel ceiling treatment (acoustic ceiling panels with painted ceiling) will also be used throughout the concourse level. New overhead lighting will provide enhanced illumination. The existing light grey terrazzo floors will be repaired and refurbished and the existing rectangular, white wall tiles will be retained.
Platform Level: There will be no changes to the existing finishes (including floors, trainway walls and ceiling) at platform level.
Public Art
Public art will be provided and will consist of either art applied to the retaining wall or an installation within the East Entrance plaza. TTC and the City of Toronto will be selecting an artist in 2009.
How will this affect you during construction?
Construction starts in Spring 2010 and is scheduled for completion in 2013. The station will remain open during the period of construction. Construction updates will be posted in the station and a telephone “hot line” will be available.
The construction will be done in 4 stages:
Stage 1 – Parking Lot Reconstruction - 2010: During this period the existing Main Commuter Parking Lot will be reconfigured to provide a new Passenger Pick-up and Drop-off and taxi stand, parking spaces and a construction staging area for the new Bus Terminal, tunnel and East Entrance.
Stage 2 – Construction of East Entrance - 2010: During Stage 2, construction of the new TTC Bus Terminal, the tunnel connection to the existing station concourse and installation of a new elevator from concourse to platform level will commence. The new East Entrance (north of the existing) will be completed.
Stage 3 – Construction of New Bus Terminal - 2011/2012: The new East Entrance will open for public use, which will allow for demolition of the existing entrance. Construction of the new Bus Terminal will continue and the fare line at concourse level will be reconfigured.
Stage 4 – Demolition of Existing Bus Terminal - 2013: During the final stage of construction, the new TTC Bus Terminal will be opened and the existing bus terminal will be closed and ready for demolition. Mississauga Transit will transfer its bus operations to the new Inter-regional Bus Terminal at Kipling Station. Lastly, the West Entrance and Passenger Pick-up and Drop-Off walkway and shelter building will be completed.
