At Woodbine Subway Station commencing in 2012, subject to funding the TTC will begin construction of stairs and an underground walkway from the subway platforms to an exit building located at street level and the installation of two elevators within the station.

Project Objectives

  • Construction of Second Exit facilities from the subway platforms with stairs leading to an Exit Building located at street level;
  • Installation of two elevators within the subway station providing for accessibility from street level to concourse and platform levels; and
  • Rehabilitation of the bus roadway pavement.

Project Benefits

  • Additional means of exit from the subway platforms to street level; and
  • Full station accessibility including: elevators from street level to and from eastbound and westbound platforms, automatic (wider) doors at the subway station main entrance and improved fare line.

Key Design Solutions

Easier Access:

At Woodbine Station, the Easier Access improvements consist of the following major elements:

  • Two new accessible elevators servicing the westbound and eastbound platforms.
  • Expanded entrance building at street level to accommodate elevator E1 servicing the street level, concourse level and eastbound platform. Construction of elevator E1 is contained within TTC property.
  • Elevator E2 servicing the concourse level and westbound platform. Construction of elevator E2 is within the City Right of Way.
  • A reconfigured concourse to accommodate elevator lobbies and a barrier free path across the concourse.
  • Upgrade of station entrance doors to accessible automatic sliding doors, installation of accessible power-assisted door from the station building to the bus bay; and installation of new Easier Access fare gate.
  • Altered bus driveway entrance and bus loop with lay-by to accommodate expanded building required by Easier Access.

Second Exit:

At Woodbine Station, the Second Exit facility consists of the following major elements:

  • A new means of egress from each of the platforms at a minimum of 25 metres away form the existing platform exit stair / escalator.
  • Each new platform exit leads to stairs and a corridor to the new Second Exit building at street level.
  • For reasons of exiting efficiencies, passenger convenience, security and minimizing the extent of new construction and resulting impacts on the neighbourhood, the distance between the egress points at platform level and the Second Exit building are designed to be the minimum practical.
  • The location of the Second Exit building at grade also provides a clear view from the station’s main entrance, and with doors sheltered from normally prevailing winds.

How and When Will the Project Be Constructed?

The construction is forecast to begin in 2012 and to be completed in 2014. The construction will be phased to minimize the impact to the neighbourhood.
