Background

A Fire and Life Safety Assessment Study completed by TTC consultants identified fourteen high priority stations requiring an alternative exit from station platform to street. Subsequently, the Second Exit program was introduced to provide a second exit route from station platforms at those fourteen high priority stations which includes Greenwood.

The design criteria for second exits require exits to:

  • Provide a separate route for exiting the stations that is remote from existing exits;
  • Maintain 25 meters minimum distance from the existing exist;
  • Provide minimum 2.4 meters wide path from each platform to street level.

In addition to the “Second Exit” project, TTC Easier Access Program will provide elevators at the entrance of Greenwood subway station for barrier free access to subway platforms.

Second Exit Project Objectives

Safety is the driving factor behind the creation of the Second Exit Program. Providing more than one exit from stations increases their evacuation capacity and reduces evacuation time thus improving passengers’ safety in cases of emergency. The introduction of an exit building will help maintain familiarity with these exit routes.

What Does the Second Exit Project Involve?

In order to achieve these objectives, the Project involves the following work:

  • The construction of new stairs from each platform.
  • A connecting passageway over station.
  • The construction of a street level exit building.
  • Landscaping, streetscape and sidewalks.

Project Status

Several Public and Construction Liaison Committee Meetings were held to discuss the Project and receive feedback. A Public Meeting will be held in the future for community feedback on the design and to provide updates on the schedule.
