Next Vehicle Information System - Project

  • The Toronto Transit Commission launched its next vehicle arrival notification system pilot project at Spadina Station in 2008 and is expanding again to include TTC streetcar shelters.
  • The pilot project began with routes 510 Spadina and 509 Harbourfont at the Spadina & Union stations. It will now be expanded to an additional three streetcar shelters. One at Spadina/Dundas (505 Dundas), one at Queen/Spadina (501/301  Queen ), and one at King/Bathurst (504 & 508 routes).
  • Four more shelters will be launched within the first few months of 2010. This includes two which will be powered by solar technology. The solar shelters will be located at the Broadview and Dundas West Stations.
  • TTC customers will be able to find out when their next bus or streetcar will arrive, either by flat screen LCD monitors in subway stations or through LED screens at select TTC stops.
  • Customers will receive real-time, reliable and relevant information about when the next vehicle is due to arrive.
  • The system uses Global Positioning System software.  All streetcars have been retrofitted to use GPS to support this initiative. The GPS retrofit of  buses will continue throught 2010.
  • Work to allow customers to be able to use SMS Text for information about next vehicle arrival information on all TTC surface routes has began. The final project roll-out will include a unique identifier for each vehicle stop to allow customers to obtain specific stop information via wireless technologies (i.e. Internet and/or SMS text messaging).
