January 2010
2000:
TTC Operator Bill White officially became Canada’s Best Operator by winning CUTA’s National Bus Roadeo in Victoria, B.C.
2000:
The 509 Harbourfront streetcar line was officially opened.
2001:
The TTC celebrated the 80th anniversary of public transit in Toronto.
2001:
The TTC officially accepted the last T-1 subway car from Bombardier Inc.
2002:
The Sheppard Subway was officially opened.
2002:
The TTC carried its all-time daily high ridership of 1.995 million on Friday, July 26 during the World Youth Day festivities and papal visit.
2002:
The new Eglinton Division/Garage opened, replacing Danforth and the old Eglinton complexes.
2003:
The TTC introduced its Ridership Growth Strategy, outlining the TTC’s funding priorities to grow ridership over the next decade.
2003:
Subway and streetcar service was knocked out for several days as a result of a massive power outage affecting nearly 50 million people across the Eastern Seaboard of North America. The TTC bus fleet kept the city rolling.
2004:
The TTC celebrated the 50th anniversary of Canada’s First Subway – the Yonge line from Eglinton to Union.
2004:
City Council approved the St. Clair streetcar right-of-way.
2005:
The TTC introduced the new transferable Metropass and Weekly Pass.
2005:
The TTC officially launched its fifth Community Bus route – 405 Etobicoke.
2006:
The TTC’s new, bi-metal token went on sale to the public.
2006:
Metropasses became eligible for a new federal tax credit.
2007:
Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced a one-time commitment worth up to $697 million for the Spadina subway extension into York Region.
2007:
TTC Chair Adam Giambrone announced the TTC’s Toronto Transit City – Light Rapid Transit Plan, a network of dedicated and fully accessible streetcar rapid transit lines.
2007:
Gary Webster was appointed TTC Chief General Manager.
2008:
The highly anticipated platform makeover of Museum Station was officially unveiled.
2008:
The TTC’s safety culture transformation was officially branded Work Safe-Home Safe.
2008:
The TTC’s largest ever service increases, part of the Ridership Growth Strategy, were introduced.
2008:
Mount Dennis Division/Garage opened.
2009:
The TTC achieved its all-time highest ridership record by carrying 471.2 million customers in one year.
