Sheppard LRT Launch Event

February 2010

The TTC and its funding partners officially launched the construction of the Sheppard LRT line on Dec. 21, 2009.

“This is the first Transit City line to get under construction,” said TTC Chair Adam Giambrone. “It’s 14 kilometres from Don Mills to Meadowvale that will provide a vital link for Scarborough, and help prepare for the Pan Am Games in Toronto in 2015.”

The line will provide an east-west service along Sheppard Avenue in northeast Toronto, from Don Mills Station on the Sheppard Subway to Meadowvale.

The Sheppard LRT will cost $950 million. The provincial government is contributing two thirds of the cost (up to $630 million). The federal government will contribute one third of the cost (up to $330 million).

“By providing more convenient, affordable, faster rides on public transit we are tackling congestion, creating jobs, stimulating the economy and improving the air we all breathe,” said Transportation Minister Jim Bradley (Kathleen Wynn became the new Transportation Minister on Jan. 18). “That is why Metrolinx is building a truly integrated transit network for the people across the GTA.”
