Artist conception of new Subway train

April 2009

The TTC’s next generation of subway trains – the Toronto Rockets – start rolling in the Yonge-University-Spadina Subway in the spring of 2010.

Built by Bombardier Transportation, the new trains will be a “six-car-fixed” configuration with open gangways, enabling riders to move freely from one end of the train to the other. The 39 fully accessible train sets will replace the subway fleet’s oldest cars.

“We have taken every opportunity that we can to maximize the quality of service that we are going to give our customers, as well as maximize the features available to improve their trip,” says Operations General Manager Rick Cornacchia. “You only get this chance once every 30 years and I believe this train will be a trendsetter in North America.”

The TTC has a procurement option for 21 additional trains to replace H-6 cars, which has not yet been exercised, to bring the total to 60 train sets, adds Cornacchia. These 60 Toronto Rocket trains will be dedicated to the Y-U-S line, leaving the remaining fleet of T1s for the B-D and Sheppard lines.
