Premier announces 7 billion for TTC

April 2009
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced more than $7 billion for the TTC’s Transit City projects on April 1.
Three of the five major transportation projects announced by the premier include the TTC. They are:
- Eglinton Crosstown LRT: from Kennedy Station to Pearson Airport. Length: 31 km. Cost estimate: $4.6 billion. Construction: 2010-2016. The TTC is conducting preliminary planning.
- Etobicoke-Finch West LRT: west from Yonge Street (Finch Station) to Humber College; east from Yonge Street (Finch Station) to Don Mills Station on the Sheppard Subway. Length: 18 km. Cost estimate: $1.2 billion. Construction: 2010-2013. The TTC is conducting preliminary planning for the section from Humber College to Yonge Street.
- Scarborough RT: replace existing vehicles and upgrade existing infrastructure; extend the line to Malvern Town Centre or Markham Road. Total length: 11.6 km. Cost estimate: $1.4 billion. Construction: 2010-2015.
“This is part of our plan to get shovels in the ground quicker on transit projects because we need the jobs they create today,” McGuinty said.
The TTC’s Toronto Transit City – Light Rapid Transit Plan, unanimously endorsed by the Commission on March 21, 2007, is a 120-km network of dedicated and fully accessible streetcar rapid transit lines.
“Public transit is the lifeblood of a modern city,” said Toronto Mayor Miller. “By investing more than $7 billion in Transit City light rail projects in Toronto, we are working together to stimulate the economy and create green jobs, protect the environment and bring fast, reliable transit to areas of the city that have been underserved for decades.”
Transit City is a shared vision for public transit in Toronto between the City, the TTC and Metrolinx, which the provincial government included in its MoveOntario 2020 plan, added Miller.
