Officials broke ground on six kilometres of dedicated bus-only lanes on July 25.

The York University BRT (bus rapid transit), from Downsview Station to the York Campus, will open next summer.

“This dedicated busway will provide reliable bus service to students and other transit riders where it is needed,” said Mayor David Miller.

The BRT route is an interim solution until the Spadina Subway Extension is built. Approximately 1,700 buses serve the university, which is attended by 52,000 full- and part-time students, on a daily basis.

“Riders, and in particular students of York University who have been frustrated with crowded, irregular service to campus, will see a real improvement in the reliability of the service that they count on,” said TTC Chair Adam Giambrone.

The York University Busway will significantly improve the speed and reliability of bus services between Downsview Station and York University. The busway project involves the designation of existing High Occupancy Vehicle traffic lanes on Dufferin Street and Allen Road as bus-only. Additionally, new bus-only roadways will be constructed in the hydro corridor between Keele Street and Dufferin Avenue, just north of Finch Avenue West, as well as on York University lands.
