Commission Approves 2009 TTC, Wheel-Trans Operating Budgets

Commissioners approved the 2009 TTC Operating Budget worth almost $1.3 billion, with an operating subsidy requirement of $369 million. The TTC requires additional funding of $87 million to balance the budget. Large amounts of the budget are devoted to maintaining and improving service standards and accommodating a ridership increase of 480 million, the introduction of a 20-minute-or-better service frequency on the surface in off-peak hours, and reliability measures on the 501 Queen streetcar route.

Commissioners also approved the Wheel-Trans Operating Budget worth $79.6 million to accommodate a four-per cent increase in ridership to over 2.3 million.

Fitness-For-Duty Policy Approved

Commissioners approved a fitness-for-duty policy at the TTC. The TTC will develop a policy that includes assistance programs, prevention measures and investigation tools to address employee fitness for duty issues.  The new policy will not include random drug and alcohol testing.  The policy will include testing for reasonable cause, post-violation, post-treatment, post-incident and job applicants.

TTC staff will consult with its three unions – ATU Local 113, CUPE Local 2 and IAMAW Lodge 235 – on policy implementation issues.

Vic Park Bus Terminal Replacement Awarded To Ellisdon

Commissioners awarded the Victoria Park Bus Terminal Replacement Project to the EllisDon Corporation. The makeover at Victoria Park Station will include a new six-bay surface level bus terminal, three elevators, two new entrances, a new off-street passenger pick-up and drop-off facility and taxi stand, and improved station finishes with public art. The existing station roof and the bus terminal canopies will have new green roofs.

Special Event Pass Approved

Commissioners approved Special Event Passes for events in Toronto with a minimum attendance of 100,000. The pass will be offered as a Group Pass (up to six users, maximum two adults) valid for travel on a single day. The Special Pass could also be issued as a Weekly Pass. All costs of a special pass will be borne by event organizers.

More Platform Litter Bins On The Way

Commissioners approved the return of waste and recycling receptacles on all subway platforms. The TTC has bins on 28 platforms now. All 69 stations will be equipped by the end of January 2009.
