Commission Meeting Highlights
Procurement of Light Rail Vehicles
The Commission approved a recommendation to begin talks with three light rail vehicle manufacturers for the procurement of new 100 % Low Floor Light Rail Vehicles. In July, the Commission cancelled the original Request for Proposal after two companies, Tram Power Limited and Bombardier Transportation Canada Inc., submitted proposals deemed unacceptable to the TTC. Talks will take place with Alstom Transportation Incorporated, Bombardier Transportation Canada and Siemens Canada Limited.
Diversity in the Workplace
The commission approved the TTC’s diversity plan. The plan outlines the goals and objectives that will guide the TTC’s efforts to strategically enhance and support its initiatives for employees and customers.
Commuter Parking
The Commission approved a recommendation to discontinue the policy of allowing Metropass holders to park for free at TTC commuter parking lots. The TTC’s 14,000 parking spaces generate $2.7 million per year. However, with an operating budget of $6.3 million per year, the TTC loses money on its parking lots, as 80% of all parking spaces are occupied by Metropass users. The new policy begins in the second quarter of 2009.
Capital Budget
The Commission approved the 2009-2013 Capital Program and 10 year Capital forecast. The 2009 Capital Budget is in the amount of $759 million, and the 2009-2013 Capital Program is set at $4.722 billion. Included in the program is the purchase of 204 Light Rail Vehicles and 234 new subway cars. The Commission also approved a budget request of $134 million in 2009 and $6.932 billion for the years 2009-2012 for the Transit City Plan and the MoveOntario initiatives.
TTC By-Law Number 1
The Commission approved a revised TTC By-Law Number 1, which will see an increase in the set fine amounts for various infractions, subject to approval by the Chief Justice of Ontario.
